Diverse and beautiful walk departing from Ballabio that leads to the highest point of the Grigne, Rifugio Brioschi.
Parts of the walk can be intense and a bit tricky; it's not intended for beginning hikers. But it's doable. Small parts have chains to help the climb / descent.
Only the 'Cresta di Piancaformia' requires confidence and concentration, as it's quite narrow with drops on both sides.
The views during the walk are spectacular.
We slept at Rifugio Bietti Buzzi.
From Ballabio you start with the climb towards Piani Resinelli and rifugio Soldanella.
When you reach the gravel road (via Carlo Mauri), turn right and follow it going north, north-east. The road will become the Traversata Bassa and leads to rifugio Antoinetta al Pialeral (1400m), which is a good point for lunch.
From the rifugio starts the climb towards Grignone (2409m) over the via Estiva (summer trial). Check the signs, as at a certain point we were following the winter trial.
From the top follow the rocky Cresta Piancaformia until Bocchetta del Guzzi. Here you'll see Rifugio Bietti Buzzi (1719m) below on your left and start you descent, which can be a bit tricky.
In winter and spring towards the top the trial will probably be covered in snow.
From rifugio Antoinetta al Pialeral until Grignone there is not much cover from the sun.
Good sturdy walking shoes, head protection for the sun.
Hiking poles are recommended.
