The first part of the walk follows the main track to the summit. It's uphill from the start with only a couple of respites along the way. It may be worth while taking some water with you on warmer days.
Starting at the car park the track rises through woodland to turn sharp right, nearly back on yourself. It climbs up and past the "half way house" where you can purchase drinks and ice cream. The track continues and turns left and up out of the woodland with a short levelling out before the next steep rise to Heavens Gate, the entrance of the Bronze Age hill fort.
Continuing up and past the television transmitter the summit is reached giving good views across the Shropshire plains towards the Shropshire Hills and further in the distance the Welsh hills.
At the summit a little used path is taken. With you looking at the white GPS marker turn to about 8 oclock to head left to a small path leading down.
The trail starts to follow the ascent track back but at a lower level. It soon turns into the upper woodland with a few steep decents into bluebell woodland before joining the main track back to the bottom.
There are many variations of this walk with plenty of other trails to explore.
This walk should take about 1.5 hours and is suitable for all those who are reasonably fit.
Walking boots are recommended but not essential.
The Wrekin is easily accessible from the M54 motorway (Jct 7).. Exit the slip road and turn the opposite way to Wellington . After about 1.5 miles there is free roadside parking & car park.
