This easy route starts by Withyham Church and follows parts of both the Wealdway and High Weald Landscape trails. Some excellent views and scenery crossing the Buckhurst Estate.

This route follows surfaced drives and roadways for much of the distance, but as these are mostly private access there is little traffic. The route climbs steadily and gives wide views before descending through woodland on the edge of Ashdown Forest. A small byway takes you from Friars Gate, where the Half Moon Pub was located, climbing quite steeply, again giving views to the West. The return leg crosses open fields before entering a woodland edge path & then joining the drive through Buckhurst Park & past the old well and cricket pitch before coming out by the Dorset Arms. The last few hundred metres take you through the churchyard. A splendid display of snowdrops here in February 2021.

Author’s recommendation

There are good views and plenty of wildlife as well as grazing farm animals. Maybe a camera & binoculars.

There are no refreshment points or shops on this route except for the Dorset Arms., so you may want to take your own drinks & nibbles.

Safety information

You cross the B2188 twice. This is a busy road and some traffic travels well in excess of the speedlimit. Take care when crossing, children and dogs need to be under control at these points.

You'll need a lead for a dog as you are crossing farmland where there may be grazing animals.
