Mill tour through Mühlhausen

In the medieval imperial city of Mühlhausen there were around 20 mills around 1800. They spread out at the Pöpperöder Bach, the Unstrut and the Breitsülze. Only a few locations remain today. You can discover them on this tour. The tour starts at the Popperode fountain house, one of the most beautiful fountain houses in Germany. It is connected to the Popperöder Bach and thus closely to the history of the mills. The path leads along the Schwanenteichallee past the Schwanenteich. The recreation area around the swan pond invites you to linger, offers fun for children and nature lovers will also get their money's worth here. You walk part of the way directly along the swan pond before you turn into Popperöder Gasse, then follow the Heyeröder Landstraße for a bit and turn right into the path at the Popperöder Bach. At the end of the route, turn left into Obermühlenweg and before the small bridge turn right into Zur Roten Löwenmühle. After a short time you will come to Mittelmühle. The building complex still exists and was lovingly restored in 1994. Here you can discover a millstone in front of the building. Via Kettengasse and Spielbergstraße, the tour leads to the right via Friedensstraße and the grounds of the Puschkinhaus and Weidenmühle guest house to the former Weidenmühle. Here you have the opportunity to stop. A mill wheel reminds of the former mill location. Back on Spielbergstrasse, cross Brunnenstrasse and at the end turn left into Lindenbühl and a short time later also left into Wanfrieder Strasse. Here you can discover the Kugelleichsmühle. It has been renovated in recent years and offers residential and commercial space in the center of Mühlhausen. The route continues via Lentzeplatz and the nearby Jakobikirche over the Hoher Graben with beautiful views of Mühlhausen's old town. When you get to the inner Frauentor, go through the gate and keep to the left. You will find the former Antonius mill on Holzstrasse. It was a mustard mill and now houses a restaurant. Via the Holzstraße, past the Marienkirche, follow the Steinweg, the Mühlhausen shopping street, before you turn left into the site. Passing the bus station, cross the street at the pedestrian traffic light and keep to the right. The former castle mill is located on the corner of the streets An der Burg and Krümme. Today the building houses a telecommunications museum. Follow the Kreuzgraben and cross the intersection into Friedrich-Engels-Straße before you turn left to the former Klingemühle, the end point of the tour.
