A delightful ramble along the river Wharfe
moderate
Distance 9.5 km
Bolton Abbey is east of Skipton off the A59. Warning: On the road to the car park, Bolton Priory archway has restricted width of 2.8 metres and height of 3.3 metres
Park at the Riverside car park and meet at the Cavendish tea rooms (toilets).
(Route also shows alternative parking in 'The Village' at Bolton Abbey Car Park)
Continue along the River Wharfe to The Strid (great views of the river but take care on slippery rocks). Turn left uphill by the large 'River Life' notice board then bear right passing the covered 'Lady Harriet's Seat' then on a narrowing and steep path to the viewpoint where Turner painted 'Barden Tower, on the Wharfe'. Continue uphill to the Strid Wood cafe & toilets. Return the same way.
After lunch, take to the riverbank alongside the carpark (known as Sand Holm) then straight on to a kissing gate (the gate can be lifted off its hinges if your scooter is too large but be sure to replace the gate correctly) and into a meadow called 'Hartington Seat'. Bear right to meet the car park access road. Continue on the footpath past the Cavendish Monument and downhill to the Abbey Church. Pass this and enter the grounds through a gate on the left. Enjoy the riverside and the Abbey grounds then return the same way (possibly going straight down the car park access road if it is quiet).
