A fascinating place. In 1751 the 6th Earl of Coventry commissioned the young Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown to develop his recently inherited house and grounds.
In 1940 it became the site of RAF Defford, a top secret base for the development of RADAR.
Other owners have left their mark too but generally the land and house had fallen into almost terminal decay before the National Trust stepped in.
Over the years much work has been done to restore the house and landscape and improvements seem to take place between each visit.
This route takes in many of the estate’s finest features.
