Philippa ReaderA very pretty undulating route that starts in Tonedale on the edge of Wellington and follows the Tone River out to Holywell Lake and onto the hillside beyond. The return leg loops back over farmland and through Westford.

Distance 10.2 km
This lovely route starts down in Tonedale, Wellington and the footpath soon meets the West Deane Way which follows the line of the old Grand Western Canal. There is just a little evidence of the canal at this point in the shape of the land.
The footpath runs alongside the River Tone until it takes you up a tributary to Holywell Lake. The path then climbs the hillside behind Holywell Lake, passing the Holy Well, and on to a road. From the top you loop back around towards the village before which you head right over a small ridgeline into the valley of another tributary which you follow back to Tonedale.
There are several other route options in the area:
If you carry on along the old canal footpath beyond Harpford Bridge you can pick up the West Deane Way again which takes you up onto Langford Common, into Langford Budville and back down to Runnington before returning into Tonedale.
A shorter 2 mile walk for younger children goes out from Tonedale Mill to ponds near the sports centre known as the Basins and loops back past Linden House Nursing home.
