An 8-mile round trip taking in Lud's Church and the Roaches with fantastic views (and pubs)
moderate
Distance 13.2 km
Starting from near The Ship Inn/Wincle Brewing Co in Danebridge (Wincle) head across the bridge and take a left turn through the gate on the other side to follow the river, keeping it on your left.
Follow the track through the forest (stick to the path, it's easier) for some time as it winds through the trees.
Avoid the fist right turn up the road and keep following the path towards Gradbach.
After a while you will come to a path that almost doubles back the way you came up the hill. Take it, and follow it round all the way to the top, where you will find an open space and a large rock.
With the standing rock on your left, there will be a signpost on your right and a choice of 4 paths. Take the path furthest away from you on the right towards Lud's church.
(Be aware, in wet weather Lud's Church can get quite boggy, so bring boots or you can choose to skirt round it and keep to the path - they meet up eventually so you can keep following our map).
After you have climbed out of Lud's Church, follow the path and then curve to the right to head up on top of the ridge heading South East.
You'll shortly be confronted by another signpost with several choices. Back the way you came, The Roaches (off to your left, where our waypoints lead) or to your right, to shorten the walk and to head back towards the start point. It's up to you.
In either case you will be rewarded with fantastic views of the valley below. If you headed over to The Roaches, just double back over the same path.
If you turned right or completed The Roaches, head now over the wall and follow the path along the ridge back towards the start point, keeping the edge on your left. There are some nice rocks to climb here for some great photo opportunities - just do it safely.
Keep following the path along the top until you reach a stile. Cross it, and head out across the open field following the track before curving with it back down to the left and off the hill onto a road.
A short way down the road on your left will be another stile. Cross it and head towards the buildings but skirt around (it's private land). Keep to the path.
At the end of the short path will be another stile with an open field behind, clearly identifieable by the single large rock in the middle of the field and forest behind. Cross the field and head down into the forest.
Follow the track through the forest, always taking the option to head down. Soon you will come to a stream flowing across the oath and a view of the bridge near where you started below. That's it!
