Distance 13.7km (8½ miles)
Total ascent 740m
Time 5 hours
Start Sourlies (NM867950); finish Inverie, NG766000
Terrain boggy ground then small but fairly good hill paths; some steep, rocky sections before joining good tracks
NM867950 From Sourlies follow the coast, on the beach at low tide or over the headland if high tide prevents it, to meet the River Carnach. Follow the river inland across boggy ground to come to a (now thankfully repaired) footbridge that takes you over the river to the ruins of Carnoch.
NM866966 From Carnoch you begin the biggest ascent of the whole weekend: climbing steeply on a small but good path, zigzagging in places, all the way from sea-level to the 550m bealach of Mam Meadail.
NM853978 Descend west from the bealach into the beautiful Gleann Meadail, now in Knoydart proper. The Allt Gleann Meadail is to your left for much of the descent but as the glen narrows near the bottom you cross the river and continue down, passing Druim Bothy (self-catering accommodation) to come to a second bridge, this time over the Inverie River.
NM798988 Cross the bridge to reach a track and turn left along it for the final descent into Inverie. After passing a turning to your left, this track takes you northwest into woodland then south down to the shores of Loch Nevis and the main road. Head right along it to reach the pub and the pier to catch the ferry to Mallaig.
