15 mile walk with around 3000 feet of Ascent. A really pleasant walk starting and finishing in Pontsticill and going over the most southenly and remote of all the peaks in the Brecon Beacons, Cefn y Ystrad.
The walk starts in a forest and has lakes, mountains, a waterfall, two quarries (one limestone, one sandstone) with really good examples of sedimentary layering.
The walk also follows part the Bryn Oer Tramroad, visits a war mermorial (WMO 255785) which marks the crash site of a Wellington bomber T2520 in 1940. It also passes a couple of well preserved boundary stones (BS) engraved with the letters D of B and TM one one side and GH on the other. marking the boundary between the Duke of Beaufort, Tretower Manor and the Gwynne Holford's.
One of my favorite walks with great views and a walk that even on the nicest days will leave you very much alone for great stretches.
Please note, some parts of this walk (Cefn Y Ystrad in particular) are remote and there are no defined paths. In low cloud or bad weather you may require map and compass to navigate.
