From Newhaven's coastal industrial ruins, via Saxon history, to climb the downs and down to Firle. Trains there and back. 12 miles.
easy
Distance 15.3 km
Leaving from Newhaven Harbour train station, walk through grim industrial area to the former industrial area on the beach, home of a WWI seaplane station, and the Tide Mills village abandoned in the mid C20th.
From there we walk to Bishopstone. At the church, see the Saxon sundial and doorway.
Then walking up and over the downs, reaching the ridge. We descend the ridge on a private path in a holloway (see permission?). At the bottom of the downs, look for the Beanstalk Cafe (summer only), the Firle Tower (private residence), and then walk through the Firle estate to Firlle Village.
The Ram Inn in Flrile is excellent and delightful place to stop and recover (supper served from 6:30pm). From there, allow a good half-an-hour walk to Glynde train station.
If coming from Brighton by train, buy a return to Newhaven Harbour. You probably need an additional ticket to ride from Glynde to Lewes, but it's unlike you'll get checked.
