The name Moldrams Ground was taken from three German brothers who settled here. Their family business was making worsted stockings which they sold in the local district. The remains of their cottage was visible in the early 20c and the original source of drinking water was in Wet Mead, the field across the lane. Descendants of the brothers still live in Pen Selwood and the family is one of the oldest in the parish.
In more recent years, the site was used for rearing chickens, and was owned by Wessex Water until 1987 when it was acquired by South Somerset District Council, when it was designated as a local nature reserve, and is now managed as an important habitat for wildlife.
Pen Selwood is an ancient settlement whose name derives from Pen (a ridge) and Selwood (a wood of sallies or pussywillows), it is where Kenwalh, King of the West Saxons, fought and defeated the Britons in 658 AD.
