A beautiful walk in the heart of Rossendale that will take you past 3 reservoirs 2 quarries and woodlands. One of Lancashire true gems.
The Grane Road between Haslingden and Blackburn offers some outstanding scenery either side of the road, some of that scenery is out of view and this walk will take to those places. The route will take you on both sides of the road and in and out of woodland, reservoirs and open land.
Start at Clough Head car park off the A6177 Blackburn to Haslingden road. The car park closes at 5:00pm so make sure you leave enough time to get back to your car after your walk. With the Cafe behind you head left towards the small wooded area in front of Jamestone Quarry. Head through the gate and through the wood on a slight right directional path until you exit the wood and see the quarry. Head left until you see a stile, head over the stile so the quarry is on your right and walk the perimeter fence until you head down Deep Clough and back up again were you will now see a second quarry to your right. Half way along the quarry you will head left and pick up the Rossendale Way for a while until you get to Clod Farm just past the forest.
Just after Clod Farm take a diagonal right across the fields on a downwards slope until you reach Wellsprings Farm (or you can follow the OS path which will lead you out at the same place. At the Farm take a left through a small pathway until you reach Holden Hall Cottages. Pass through the gate and head on to the main road A6177 taking a left and then crossing over near the Holden Wood tea rooms. Just after you pass the tea rooms you will come to a junction with the B6235, take a sharp right down the lane that heads towards Holden Wood Reservoir and follow it until you come to a Stile Ladder on your left in between two farms. Head across the field on a right diagonal until you see a way pointer, take a sharp right and follow the path towards Ogden Reservoir. You will have to climb over a fence to get on the reservoir side.
Once at the reservoir follow the path until you come to the last reservoir (Calf Hey). Follow the path around until you come to a wooded area, pass through the wood and back down the steps and pick the path up again until you get to some old ruins. Carry on past and follow the path until you reach the car park. Walk through the car park and look for the path on the left. This will lead you through a wooded area until you reach the main road. Cross over in a diaganal left and look for the path leading you back to the car park where you started.
I love this area and often walk the different routes when i don't have time to travel further afield. On a sunny day the views are outstanding and worth visiting the area for. The cafe on the car park is also very friendly and the food is nice and reasonable priced.
