A scenic route from Grove Ferry to Canterbury, taking in Stodmarsh NNR, farmland and woodland.
easy
Distance 10.5 km
This walk can be completed in either direction, but is presented here starting from Grove Ferry.
The route crosses Stodmarsh National Nature Reserve, an area known for it's booming Bittens and breeding Marsh Harriers.
The route is a mix of reed marsh, farmland and woodland. Do note a small section requires walking along the side of a road with no footway.
This route only covers as far as the edge of Canterbury, here you can either walk down to Sturry road, for a bus back to Grove Ferry, or follow the signs for National Cycle Route 1, to continue into the historic centre of Canterbury.
Parking is available at Grove Ferry (£1.20 per day at time of writing). A bus from Canterbury & Ramsgate stops at the top of the hill near Grove Ferry if you're doing the walk using public transport.
At Fordwich there is the option of heading to Sturry where there are buses to Canterbury, Ramsgate & Herne Bay, as well as a train station on the Ashford/Ramsgate line.
There are four pubs along the route, one at Grove Ferry, one in Stodmarsh, and two in Fordwich.
This is the free version of this route. I have also published a paid for version of this route. Both routes are identical, if you found the free version useful, please consider purchasing the paid version.
