A tough but rewarding scrambling route taking in Grindsbrook Clough and Crowden Clough
difficult
Distance 13.7 km
A fine scrambling day out taking in two of Kinder Scouts popular routes.
Start at Barber Booth making your way over to Edale where you pick up the main path upto Grindsbrook.
Ascend the Scrambling route to the top, with the option of another scrambling route to the right as you near to top and reach the fork in the stream. I kept to the main route for this.
Once at the top make a beeline back on yourself across the ridge to ascend Groundslow Knoll and down towards Broadlee Bank Tor.
From here you drop down a rather steep and poorly defined track, so take care here.
Once at the bottom you will reach a small wood, from here you bare right and pick up the path which joins Crowden Cloughs primary route up.
Keep on the track until you reach a fork in the stream, a path will lead up left but you need to ignore this and keep to the stream bed, picking your way through to the upper levels.
Take care through this, there is no real defined route but if you look hard you will see where others have trodden before you.
Upon reaching the upper levels you will naturally see a gorge which you can head directly up, however my route follows a slightly more adventurous route up which is less defined. Choose whatever takes your fancy at the time.
Once at the top depending on which way you took, pick up the small path back on yourself which will take you along the ridge and down a rather steep, long winded and faint track eventually bringing you out on the packhorse bridge at the bottom of Jacobs Ladder.
The more adeventurous could even now opt to ascend 'The Cloughs' for more scrambling and easily complete their route by descending Jacobs Ladder from the upper plateau, but for this route I joined the Pennine Way back to Barber Booth and completed my walk for the day.
I hope you enjoy oyur walk as much as I did should you choose to download this.
