Distance 14.2 km
The walk starts at the parking area beside Seathwaite Farm in the Borrowdale Valley in the Lake District.
Walk Straight through the farm yard and through a gate at the far end of the Farm Yard.the path then followsthe River Derwent up the valley to Stockley Bridge. The path is easy to follow and is good walking.
Stockley Bridge is an old Packhorse Bridge.
Cross the bridge and go through a gate.
Once through the gate, turn left and continue the path which heads up the valley. ( The path leading uphill from Stockley Bridge is the return route)
Cross over another small wood footbridge further up the valley and continue heading up the valley.
The path starts to get a bit steeper and there are some rocky sections once you cross the wooden bridge.
The dramatic North Face of Great End comes in to view as you get higher up the valley..
Once you reach the head of the valley, cross over Ruddy Gill by the rock steppping stones and turn left heading to Esk Hause.
At the fork in the path take the right path, which heads uphill.
This is a stone pitched path and is easily followed.Once you reach Esk Hause turn right towards Calf Cove ( This is one of the main routes to Scafell Pike)
Once at the top of Calf Cove turn right off the main Scafell Pike path and take the path heading up to Great End.
There are two summit cairns on Great End, the SW cairn is classed as the main summit. The other cairn is NW of the main cairn and is well worth a visit. Take time to take in the views above the North Face of Great End, but care will be needed in wet or windy weather ( There are some steep drops)
Retrace your steps off Great End down to Esk Hause.
Once at Esk Hause, bear right to start the climb up Esk Pike, which is straight in front of you.
The climb up Esk Pike is rocky with the final section being a rocky gully to the summit.
The views from the summit are excellent.Retrace your steps off Esk Pike back to Esk Hause.
Once at Esk Hause, carry straight on to Sprinkling Tarn.
Follow the path around the end of Sprinkling Tarn and turn right off the main path at the far side of the tarn. You are now heading over Seathwaite Fell.
The walk over Seathwaite Fell is easy going.
There are two summits on Seathwaite Fell. The Wainwright summit as at the end of the fell.
From the summit of Seathwaite Fell head to the side of the fell ( West)
There are two grass gullys heading down off Seathwaite Fell and both are very steep. You can head down either one, but care is needed, especially if the conditions are wet.
Once you reach the main path at the bottom of Seathwaite Fell, turn right.
This leads down to Stockley Bridge, where the path is followed back to Seathwaite Farm.
