Circular river and woodland walk, with some stretches across open farmland
moderate
Distance 6.6 km
The walk starts just north of Gifford on the B6369 and is signed Bolton. It follows closely the banks of Gifford (Colstoun)Water for much of the way, often through woodland. You pass the remains of Costoun Old Mill on your right before the path climbs steadily through trees till it levels out. At this point there is a wooden bench. The path splits at this point, go left, following the Gifford Water, but from high above the river, before the path then descends through woodland back down to the riverside. Soon you leave the woodland and skirt arable fields to the bridge over Gifford Water to Bolton Village. At this point don't cross the bridge but turn right and follow the farm track until a fingerpost directs you away from the fields and back into woodland. Soon you will reach the wooden bench you passed earlier. Just after this point fork left uphill before reaching open fields. The path follows the field boundary to the top side of Coulston Old Mill and at this point you should spot a fingerpost signed Gifford. Continue through gate in deer fence back into woodland. The path descends back down to Gifford Water, passing through a further gate in the deer fence. Now retrace your steps along the riverside to the start of the walk
