Going west, turn left off the A39 just at the Windmill Inn, West Quantoxhead. In 0.2 mile turn left uphill on Staple Lane. Continue to car park.
Going clockwise, leave the car park on the left main path. This goes past Beacon Hill (which can probably be climbed but might be best to save your power). Soon the route joins 'The Great Road' a drove road leading down to Holford becoming rocky near the village.
A fairly steep and continuous climb back onto the moor follows with some wet sections possible. On reaching Black Hill turn north-west. This section has many very rocky sections. However, it is the several sections of captured water that need full attention. Even in the driest weather they can be over the footplate on a Tramper. The shallowest side seems to be on the left. It is possible, with some care, to avoid (most) of these sections at the side.
