Start at the Hawes Inn in South Queensferry. Walk under the rail bridge, keeping left along the coast path instead of going up Hawes Brae.
There is a good path all the way along the coast, between trees, though you can get onto the beach at (1) and walk all the way round Hound Point (2) as far as (3) on the sand if the tide is out. Doing this will give you good views of both the Forth Bridges (behind) and Barnbougle Castle (in front).
Just before you reach Barnbougle, there is a very clear tarmac path off to the right (4). Take this road, which will eventually bring you out onto Hawes Brae.
If you wish, you can turn off the path at (5) and take a track through the woods instead. This is a fairly steep climb up and back down again over Mons Hill, which should give you good views if you go on a clearer day than we did! The Estate doesn't encourage this, and it can be very muddy after wet weather. If you take the diversion, you will eventually emerge onto the tarmac road just before the Estate gate.
Turn right down Hawes Brae to return to the start, and the Hawes Inn, where Robert Louis Stevenson is said to have stayed, and to have written part of "Kidnapped". The Inn is certainly mentioned in the novel.
We thoroughly tested the food at the Hawes, and found it to be excellent!
