Distance 22km (13¾ miles)
Total ascent 920m
Time 7 hours
Start/finish Glenmore, NH977097
Terrain road, valley track, forest, long glen, steep mountainside, broad ridge, granite tors and rounded summit. In poor visibility navigation can be very challenging.
NH977097 From the ski road in Glenmore take the access drive east towards Glenmore Lodge. Don’t turn into the lodge; instead keep heading east along the track through the Ryvoan Pass. About 500m past An Lochain Uaine the path splits; take the right branch and follow it to the site of the old Bynack Stable. The stable has long since blown down but the adjoining footbridge is still there and offers a safe crossing of the River Nethy.
NJ021105 Cross the bridge and on the other side take the left branch at the path junction. This path climbs steadily east onto a broad shoulder on the north side of Bynack More. Once the shoulder is reached, and before the path starts to descend, turn right off the path and head to the rounded bump on the north ridge of Bynack More. From the bump turn south and follow the rounded crest direct to the summit of Bynack More. If you have time explore the summit, as the granite tors known as the Barns of Bynack are very impressive.
NJ041063 To start the descent from the summit of Bynack More drop north-west and make the steep descent to the subsidiary top of Bynack Beg. This lofty outlier gives superb views of Strath Nethy and the huge upper slopes of Cairn Gorm. From Bynack Beg continue descending generally north-west and follow the rounded ridge to the path in Strath Nethy.
NJ025080 Join the path and follow it north beside the River Nethy to the footbridge at Bynack Stable. Cross the bridge then retrace your steps through the Ryvoan Pass back to Glenmore.
