Eastbourne to Newhaven via Beachy Head, Birling Gap, Cuckmere Haven, Seaford.
Promenade walk to start and then up onto grassy cliff top path around Beachy Head and The Seven Sisters. Down to a marshy / muddy sea bank at Cuckmere Haven and up over the cliff again for a promenade with shingle beach option and cycleway / footpath to end.
Weald Way
South Downs Way
Vanguard Way
Very nearly one of my top 20 coast walks but with stiff competition it just misses out. After a brief promenade walk it is up steep grassy paths to round Beachy Head and over the undulating Seven Sisters via Birling Gap. A brief marshy inland jaunt around Cuckmere Haven emerges for the archetypal view back to the Seven Sisters. Up and over the cliff once more before dropping down for a promenade / shingle beach walk through Seaford. A cycleway and footpath are then easily followed up to Newhaven railway station. The terrain isn't difficult but the ascents (over 3,500ft) can be a little alien after so much flat walking around the South of England.
My Rating: ****
