Deal To Sandgate via Walmer, Kingsdown, St Margaret's at Cliffe, Dover, Folkestone.
Esplanade / shingle beach, cliff top around the ferry port and down into Dover. Up briefly onto North Downs Way. A few steep climbs and sharp drop into Folkestone. Promenade to end.
Saxon Shore Way
North Downs Way
The low cliff tops merge Deal into Walmer and the white cliffs of Dover magically appear at Kingsdown. Take the cliff top path (the OS marked path at the cliff base is NOT a through route) and stay atop until dropping into Dover. There are lovely views down into the bustling port above Dover and a few benches for a great lunch stop. The route climbs out of Dover via a short stretch of the North Downs Way and a few of the sharp climbs can get a bit slippery after rain. The route then drops rapidly into Folkestone and a long promenade walk ends at Sandgate. A decent amount of ascent makes this an unusually hard day of walking along the Southeast coast but as the terrain is not rugged I haven't classed the difficulty as any tougher than medium.
My Rating: ***
