Whitburn to Crimdon via Seaburn, Sunderland, Seaham, Easington, Blackhall.
In and up the Wear for the bridge in Sunderland. Down off the bridge and town walking following the new England Coast Path signs. Cliff top walk passing former collieries, black beaches and a bleak industrial heritage.
England Coast Path
The walk up the Wear to Sunderland is surprisingly pleasant with a clean modern city feel around the old bridge. From hereon the new England Coast Path wanders through a grim industrial estate and out onto the cliffs above black beaches slowly regaining their former glory as the sea coal and man made colliery spoil from nearby Easington and Blackhall washes away to reveal sand again. A brief walk through the dunes finish the day. This walk is very much a heritage trail with plenty of interest if a rather glum outlook - particularly with the foul weather I had when I walked this route. The ups and downs around the cliffs South of Sunderland can make this route quite hard over 23 miles.
My Rank **
