Blyth to Whitburn via Seaton Sluice, Whitley Bay, Cullercoats, Tynemouth, North Shields, South Shields.
5 miles of sandy beach around Seaton Sluice to Whitley Bay. Beach, promenade and town merge through Cullercoats and Tynemouth before heading up the Tyne. Shields Ferry then dockside apartments, beach and amusement parks of South Shields. Cliff top walk to Whitburn.
England Coast Path
A grand beach walk to Whitley Bay is soon replaced by lots of interest and activity around Tyneside. Much of it has seen regeneration and North Shields is now full of bistros and restaurants. A quick crossing of the Tyne via the Shields Ferry leads to a walk around the newly developed docks and apartments of South Shields followed by the amusement parks and a small sandy beach at the estuary mouth. A cliff top walk to Whitburn is equally pleasurable along the newly marked England Coast Path and the whole day is full of interest with plenty to look at. This is my second essentially urban walk to make my top 20 and none of it is particularly hard going with approximately 18 miles to cover.
My Rank *****
