Reay to Dunnet via Dounreay, Forss, Thurso, Castletown.
An increasingly busy road walk with plenty of verge hopping. Only venture off road around Thurso and again at Castletown with a beach walk to finish at Dunnet.
No Marked Trails
The road is the busiest I had come across for some considerable time and the verge hopping to dodge the traffic is never pleasant. Thurso is the first town of note since Oban and possibly marked the restart of civilisation as I remember it. Five miles of bone straight road with blind switchbacks is a bit of a white knuckle ride and the verges are narrow with thick soft grass. Drop off the A836 at Castletown and pass through the old flagstone works and harbour before crossing two miles of sandy beach at Dunnet Bay. A decent end to the day always helps.
