Llandanwg to Borth-y-Gest via Harlech Beach, Ynys, Trem-y-Garth, Maentwrog, Portmeirion, Porthmadog.
Down to Harlech Beach and cross back over Royal St David's golf course to follow a OS marked path (not WCP) through pastures parallel to road. Down to salt marsh and dyke top walk with possible option to cross Pont Briwet - closed for major works in 2014. 8 mile inland detour. Up through forest and lakeside path. 1 mile dangerous road (I should have stayed with WCP) to Maentwrog. Follow Ffestiniog Railway down through woods to Penlan. WCP diverts down to Portmeirion and up and over hills again to Portmadog. Across Y Cob to Porthmadog
Wales Coast Path
WCP takes peculiar routes sometimes but probably safer to stick to it sometimes to avoid dangerous roadside walking. Path used through pasture was an easy find if populated by soporific five cattle herds - beware, particularly if you have a dog. Bridge closed for renewal but diversion well worth it for a stunning 8 mile diversion up the estuary. Glimpses through deciduous woodland and accompanying steam train noises from Ffestiniog Railway back down the estuary. Path needlessly and cynically dips down to Portmeirion tourist entrance - you will need to pay to get in.
My Rank: ***
