Kyoto Atagoyama Kiyotaki Omotesando Course
Atago-yama in Kyoto, where the head temple of Atago Shrine, which is scattered throughout the country, is located, is 924 metres above sea level. It is a popular mountain for hikers in the Kinki region, as it is easy for beginners to climb. The route starts from a bus stop near the torii gate on the approach to Atago Shrine at the foot of Mt Atago. Walk across the red Watasaru Bridge over the Kiyotaki River to the torii gate where the trail begins. The red bridge, clear water and the beautiful greenery of the mountains greet hikers immediately. After walking along a paved path and climbing up another paved staircase, you will come to a waterhole (Oyakusui). Steep stone steps continue for a while afterwards, but be careful to keep a good pace as you are starting to climb. As well as Atago Shrine on the summit, you will arrive at the 'Hi-suzu Gongen Site', which used to be dedicated to the fire god Hi-San-San-Rei-Mikoto, and further up you will see the 'Ichimonjiya Site'.
