This is my attempt to follow the E4 European Long Distance Path from Kokkinopelos to Kalampaka. Kokkinopelos is at the base of Mount Olypmpus which is crossed by an earlier section of E4 which is hiked by many visitors, however few continue as far as Kokkinopelos much less travel beyond towards Kalampaka. The first part of the route from Kokkinopelos crosses a forested mountain, then climbs up a road to the attractive village of Livadi where there are great views back towards Mount Olympus from the terrace of the Mytikas Hotel or the restaurant next door.
From Livadi the trail drops down into a basin, crossing farmland before climbing again to the village of Sarataporo. In the valley beyond Sarataporo there is a small abandoned monastery which the E4 passes before climbing through small but prickly holm oak trees to the small village of Tsapournia. A continued climb takes you over the grassland at the top of the Amarvis mountains, the track then drops down a wooded valley. After more farmland you reach the village of Livadero with its selection of cafes and shops. From Livadero the track follows a valley of grassland and woods before climbing the Kamvounia mountains beyond which is the town of Descati (with buses as well as restaurants).
After Descati the route takes you passed oak trees and over hills on tracks and tarmac until you start seeing rocky outcrops of sandstone. Beyond the village of Vlachava the track heads down a valley leading to the famous monasteries of Meteora. As you walk passed the monasteries on their rocky pillars, you join the hoards of tourists. However, none of them follow you down a narrow, cobbled path beside the Monastery of the Great Meteoran to the town of Kastraki. From there it is a short road walk to Kalampaka with many hotels, restaurants and transport links.
