Navigation skills are essential because weather around the Nire Valley can be unpredictable.
This hike covers Carrignagower (819m), Fauscoum (844m), Coumfea North Top (782m), Coumfea (796m) & Coumfea West Top (763m)
I parked in the Nire Valley Car Park.
Parking Grid Reference: S 27678 12860
Commence by walking behind the car park along the worn track towards Carrignagower.
The hike involves a few steep(ish) sections on the ascent to Carrignagower. It is mainly ridge walking after reaching Carrignagower summit. There are spectacular views over Coumshingaun Lough from the peak of Fauscoum & it is worth the slight detour to the cliff edge.
The path between Coumfea & Coumfea West Top goes extremely close to the steep cliff edge & this section is probably not for a windy day; but the views are incredible over Coumalocha at this point.
A moderate hike and a good level of fitness is required.
TIP
1 Much of the track is worn & this makes navigation straightforward. However, cloud can descend rapidly. Be prepared!
2. Don't be temped to take a direct approach to the summit of Carrignagower because the ground can be extremely boggy & problematic. Keep to the used track as indicated on the map
POST WALK
I chilled in Doocey's Bar, Curtiswood which is a 10 minute drive from the Nire Valley Car Park. It is walker friendly.
