On your hike in the area you can discover diverse forest habitats. In the near-natural Beech forests you may hear the calls or the drumming of the Black Woodpecker. In the cool and damp ravine forests the Perennial Honesty thrives, while sphagnum mosses grow in the undergrowth of the Downy Birch swamp forests.
The open landscape of the Ginsberg Heath also has a lot to offer: from dry nutrient-poor meadows and Mat-Grass land to moorland meadows with cotton grasses and other marshland plants, such as the Marsh Cinquefoil. With luck, you can see a Red-backed Shrike sitting on the willow bushes in the summer. Hunting Red Kites and the rare Black Stork can also be occasionally observed.

Tips and hintsA leaflet describing the area can be downloaded from www.biologische-station-siegen-wittgenstein.de.
You can obtain more information about Ginsburg castle, the emblem landmark of Hilchenbach, under www.hilchenbach.de (e.g. a leaflet) or www.hilchenbach-grund.de.
Nearby are the renatured sources of the rivers Eder, Sieg, Lahn, and Ilse. Around the source of the Ilse near Heiligenborn there is a fairy-tale hiking trail "Der kleine Rothaar" (The Little Red-haired Elf) (www.kleiner-rothaar.de)
The hiking trail starts at the information board of the Rothaarsteig Association and initially takes you through an old Beech forest to the Ginsburg castle ruins. From there it goes to the Hohlsterzen Stream gorge. A relatively steep and sometimes washed-out path leads through the ravine forest and up to the Ginsberg Heath.
Public transportFrom Hilchenbach you could travel the scenic route to Lützel with the Rothaarbahn train (R93) and then hike the two kilometres to the starting point on the Ginsberg Heath.
By roadIn the village of Lützel on the B 62 trunk road, turn onto the "Gillerbergstraße" and follow that road until you reach the Ginsberger Heide.
