Husfjellet is possibly Senja’s most rewarding hike. The hike is moderate, with a gradual uphill climb, but the views are simply stunning.

A trip to Husfjellet is a great alternative to Segla if you want to avoid a steep and crowded trail but still want some of the classic Senja views. The only exposure is towards the top and it’s possible to keep a good distance from the edges.

Hamn i Senja and Mefjord Brygge both offer hotel rooms as well as apartments with self-catering possibilities. Each has a restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and a bar.

Turn-by-turn directions

The hike to Husfjellet is a fairly gradual uphill climb. The trail is clear but not well-marked. There is a marshy area at the northern end of Sommerdalen before the climb up to Husfjellet. A wooden boardwalk is in place but waterproof footer is recommended.

The trailhead lies behind the picnic area next to Berg church in Skaland. After just a few minutes walk there will be a sign leading into the woods. That trail runs through a bog and is not recommended. Just continue along the road which winds around past a large shelter and eventually you’ll reach a small sign pointing right to Sommerdalen.

Follow this trail uphill, through the birch woods and along the western side of Sommerdalen. The trail flattens out and Husfjellet rises ahead of you. Turn around for views back towards Finnsæter and Hamn.

Follow the trail across the boardwalk and then begin ascending Husfjellet. The trail becomes more rocky and a little exposed, but it is still very easy going and you can walk a good distance from the cliff’s edge.

At the top of the mountain, there are more exposed trails leading to small outcrops, but you don’t need to hike out there if you don't want to. There are panoramic views of Ersfjorden, Steinfjorden and the Okshornan mountain range.

Descend along the same trail.

By road

Husfjellet is located near Skaland and Bøvær, on Senja’s northwestern coast. Park at the Berg church in Skaland, right by the trailhead.

Questions and answers

Question from Yuan Liu · February 25, 2022 · Community
Great tip! Is the estimated 3-hour duration round trip? Perhaps it may take longer with snow in mid March?

Hey Yuan Liu, Yes, the 3 hours include the descend. In snowy conditions, you will definitely need more time though. Be sure to bring the right footwear and some walking sticks. Have a save trip!

Low effort peak with great views. The path up is not too steep and is technically easy so it’s basically a hike for everyone. As everyone seems to know this I would recommend to do this as an evening hike to avoid a lot of people. The path could be in better condition though, especially the part through the mud after half the way is chaotic and should be better maintained to reduce erosion and safe the plants.
