The trek to Barden is a moderate hike very popular with locals. It’s one of the most accessible peaks on the northern end of Senja. The peak sits at 659 meters above sea level.
From the top there are views of two nearby fjords, Mefjord and Øyfjord, as well as Segla, Breidtinden and many other surrounding mountains. The mountain rises up vertically from the ocean and the large, flat peak is a great place to relax and enjoy the views. It is also suited for camping.
The first part of the hike can be quite wet so waterproof footwear is recommended. If you are looking for a longer day hike, you can continue from the top on to Segla.
Hamn i Senja, Skagi Senja and Mefjord Brygge all offer hotel rooms as well as apartments with self-catering possibilities. Each has a restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and a bar.

Turn-by-turn directions
The trailhead begins from the side of the road by the parking lot, along with the trails to Daven and Keipen.
The first part of the trail ascends through a marshy area and can be quite wet. Follow the trail up to the top of the ridge. At the top, continue to the left towards Barden.
The trail follows the ridge becoming a bit steeper and exposed but never too much. Continuing on, you will arrive at the plateau and the top of Barden. The large area is well suited for camping, but remember to take water.
Return along the same trail.
Alternate route
There is a nice clear trail up to Barden from Fjordgård to the north. The trailhead is the same as for Segla and splits shortly after the beginning.
By road
The trailhead starts by Mefjordbotn in northern Senja.
Traveling along Road 862, part of Norwegian Scenic Route Senja, take the turn towards Fjordgård.
Park in the small parking lot before the tunnel.
