The lake is located on the edge of the Arnsberg Forest between the Westphalian lowlands, the Haarstrang hills and the Sauerland and is thus on the main migration path of many waterbirds.
Between 1908 and 1913, the Möhne dam was built in Günne. This created the Möhne Reservoir, whose main task is to provide water for the industrial area of the Ruhr.
Lake Möhne is a European bird sanctuary.

In the easternmost corner, the River Möhne flows into the lake. This area is referred to as the Möhne Floodplain and is part of the Möhne Valley nature reserve. Within just a small area, a large variety of habitats has developed; different sized streams and ponds alternate with riparian forests. These are home to White and Crack Willows, Black Alder and rare flowering plants such as Cowslip, Yellow Star-of-Bethlehem and Marsh Marigold. Several species of woodpecker can be heard drumming in the forests. At the water, Kingfisher and Dippers find well-sheltered nesting sites.
