Lake Zacharias, today a nature reserve, is a groundwater lake created by sand and gravel extraction. From the observation hut on the south shore you can overlook a large part of the lake and observe waterfowl and wading birds.

In spring you can observe wading birds such as Redshank and Greenshank, Common Sandpiper and Spotted Redshank. Cormorants and lapwings are breeding and the call of the Curlew echoes around the area. In May you can see Teal and Garganey, Gadwall and Widgeon on the lake. In summer, the Greylag Geese are moulting. During the autumn migration period you can sometimes observe Cranes at dawn when they have spent the night at the lake. In winter, ducks, geese, cormorants and divers gather at the lake.

Tips and hints
If you want to make a longer bike trip, you can follow the Boker Canal westward from here to Delbrück (about 20 km in one direction). To the east of Lake Zacharias there are more excavated lakes. At one of these you will find the bathing beach "Alberssee". Also of interest are the historic centre of Lippstadt and the castle ruins in Lipperode.Start

Turn-by-turn directions
Starting from Delbrücker Weg, turn left just before the riding stables into the cul-de-sac and walk to the end of the road. Then turn right into Bleidiger Weg. A boardwalk leads from the information panel to the observation hut.
The circular trail (1.5 km) goes around the lake at some distance from the water. Starting at Delbrücker Weg, it then leads through the open fields in an eastward direction. From the farm track "Zum Freien Stuhl" you turn left in the direction of the Boker canal and follow the path through the forest towards Lipperbruch and back to the Delbrücker Weg.
Public transport
From the railway station in Lippstadt, you can take the C4 bus to Lipperbruch.By road
If you are coming via the B55 trunk road, you reach the area by turning off towards Lipperode and then driving in the direction of Mastholte. Just before leaving the village, turn right into the Delbrücker Weg and head towards the sports ground. You can park your car there.
