A popular hiking route for grandmas, as well as other members of the family! Grandmothers in Salla have been given the title Ämmi and this hiking route at Sallatunturi pays respect to them. This short route at Sallatunturi is popular, especially for its easy terrain, forest landscapes that belonged to the “crown lands” logged by the state, as well as for the camp fire place. From the route, you can pop by the Sotka spring to get the cleanest of the clean drinking water.
The ecological statusof 95% of the lakes and 94% of the rivers in Lapland is good or excellent. Deep in the Eastern Lapland wilderness, you can drink clean water straight from a stream or a spring.

Turn-by-turn directions
Services on the trail: The trail is marked by blue square signs attached to trees. There is one lean-to near the start of the trail and another approximately halfway, on the Hangasharju trail. Water is available from the Sotka spring.
Trail conditions, related risks and recommended equipment: This trail is mostly easy to traverse. There are a few uneven and steeper sections. Stairs have been built at the steepest sections and there are benches for resting at a few places along the trail. Recommended footwear: in the summer season, hiking boots or running shoes.
Description of the natural environment: Mostly dry heath forest with small swamps and ponds.
Description of the cultural environment: Magnificent views towards Sallatunturi fell.

The nearest airports are at Kuusamo (1.5 h) and Rovaniemi (2 h). There are shuttle buses connecting Kuusamo Airport and Salla, which link with almost every flight.
The nearest railway station is in Kemijärvi (1 h). There is a bus to Salla, which is timed to connect with the night train, Mon-Sat.
