What is this curious rock emerging from the fir trees? A menhir? Obelix is not a Savoyard! Look up to the 90 m of this needle of cargnele eaten away by erosion and you may see climbers clinging to the vertical wall. It will send shivers down your spine!
It is precisely here that the first French national park was inaugurated on 6 July 1963, that of La Vanoise, dedicated to the protection of an exceptional natural environment.
For some, the forest is a place conducive to creation, so the hike becomes playful when you walk along the Sentier des Arts to get to the Monolithe. A land art trail with twenty or so sculptures in the forest along the way. Children will love going from one sculpture to another. The sculptures are made by Serge Couvert, a local artist from Aussois. The tree trunks are cut and carved directly on site. They represent figures on the theme of the family. But also more unusual: a moai, a chain... The route is changing: Serge Couvert carves new sculptures every summer, so it is possible to see him sometimes at work, chainsaw or chisel in hand, on the edge of the path.
Some of the sculptures are visible from the tarmac road that goes from Aussois to the Monolithe, so they are easily accessible for pushchairs and mountain bikes.
