The "Sickinger Höhenweg" offers a pleasant hike in an idyllic countryside and great views right to the Saarland and Alsace. About 23 kilometres far, the trail winds through forests, meadows and past mossy rocks. If you are in good shape, the trail can be scheduled as a day trip.

The “Sickinger Höhe” region owes its name to the last German knight Franz von Sickingen, who once reigned here. Intriguing is the constant change of different landscapes, fascinating the wide views over the countryside. Knightly courage is of course not required but rather more a good deal of stamina should the trail be walked in one day.

Safety information

Despite the well-signposted trail markers along the premium hiking trails, we recommend for security reasons to always have an appropriate hiking map so that, for example when a storm occurs, you can quickly either find shelter or get out of the woods.

Especially in the autumn it is also important to remember that leaves lying on the ground can conceal irregularities, such as roots, rocks or holes in the path. Following storms, trees can have been uprooted or have branches hanging down. Such path impairments have to be expected when using such trails. Especially in adverse weather conditions, it may occur that the trails and paths turn into muddy and slippery passages. Path impairments of this kind have to be expected when you go out for a hike. Not all rocks or slopes are secured with ropes or railings and sure footedness is required. Should you be of the opinion that these are not accessible to you then you should try and get around them.

Destination

Railway station Waldfischbach-Burgalben

Turn-by-turn directions

We start at the railway station of Waldfischbach-Burgalben. Along forest paths we reach the “Klapperbach” and walk for a while through the beautiful valley. Then we are confronted by the first ascent: a narrow path leads in a zigzag fashion through the deciduous forest up to Quatersberg with its large wind farm. The trail crosses over the summit of the hill so we can gaze over the countryside below. Having past a small stretch of forest, we reach the outskirts of Höheinöd. We continue walking downhill to follow the soft meadow paths until we reach the hiker’s tavern “Weihermühle” in Schauerbachtal - an ideal spot for a typical Palatinate snack. Following the Schauerbach through its beautiful valley we reach the Altenbach. After crossing the stream, we climb up an exceptionally natural path with bizarre rocks lining the path and soon reach the Ramerfelsen. The path takes us between mighty mossy rocks - certainly one of the most fabulous scenic experiences of our hike.

The coniferous forest trail then climbs back again to the fertile plateau of Sickinger Höhe. After the climb we will see here burial mounds from the Celtic period and also enjoy a magnificent panoramic view. We then hike downhill to “Klapperbach” before climbing up past the village of Hermersberg. Should we suddenly start to be eyed by curious ostriches, we have not gotten lost but are just passing an ostrich farm. At the edge of the forest, we walk past the “Rohberg” and follow the downhill path through the woods back to the railway station in Waldfischbach-Burgalben.
