Limburg and Hardenburg
In addition to the largest barrel and the largest wine festival in the world, Bad Dürkheim also has two highlights of medieval architecture to offer: the Limburg monastery ruins and the Hardenburg castle ruins. Hardenburg Castle was built in the 13th century by Count Friedrich II of Saarbrücken and was later the ancestral seat of the Counts of Leiningen-Hardenburg. The castle, which was destroyed by French troops at the end of the 18th century, is one of the largest castles in the Palatinate. The Limburg dates back to the 9th century and was first used by the Salians to control the Isenbach valley before being converted into a Benedictine abbey in 1024. It is one of the most important relics of early Salian architecture.
