Hauenstein Cobbler's Trail
The premium trail „Hauensteiner Schusterpfad“ takes us around Hauenstein on a circular route of about 15 km. Along the way we roam through the beautiful nature of the Südwestpfalz with imposing red red sandstone rocks and dense forests. Again and again, wonderful views of Hauenstein and the surrounding area open up to us. Afterwards, we should not miss a visit to the German Shoe Museum.
Hauenstein is located in the southern Pfälzerwald, more precisely in the Wasgau, the Pfälzerwald-Nordvogesen biosphere reserve. The landscape surrounding the village is characterised by dense forests in which mainly beech, oak and pine trees grow. The red red sandstone rocks, such as the Hühnerstein, the Kreuzfelsen or the Niedingfelsen, are among the most popular destinations in the area. A significant shoe production developed in the village itself at the end of the 19th century, in which almost all the inhabitants of Hauenstein were active until the 1960s. Then this industry slowly came to an end, and only one of the 36 shoe factories has remained. The shoemakers' monument on the market square and the German Shoe Museum are reminders of the great days of the shoemakers.
