Cotton Grass on the moor
1 Park in the car park. It has a small charge honesty box and keeps the car safer without clogging the local roads. There are also toilets here and a tea shop. Hidden from the car park is the excellent Pendle Inn in the village
Pendle has a reputation. But no Witches were burned or otherwise met there end up here - It all happened down below and in Lancaster Assizes and jail. It was a fearful time when religion completely dominated people - eg it was illegal not to attend communion and some women and occasionally men, also tried to convince people that they could dominate them too! hence the curses and threats if they were not paid. Actually not much has changed if you reflect on it...........!
2 Access Lower Ogden dam side by the footbridge that goes over the stone walled run off channel. It is much better than the road and you can continue along this path (later) by the streamside all the way to the Upper dam wall.
Looking back on Lower Ogden Res from the road (but use the lower path)
The area around here is being replanted with native trees to attract wildlife and I saw Stonechat, Willow Warbler and Wheatear amongst other birds along this stretch
3 Stay right here above the stream and not thro the gate. This is the track and the gate going down to the stream misleads. However do be careful at point 4 to stay with the stream and clough
4 straight on here and not climbing to the right and the summit
5 Take the right hand path to make the gentle climb to the summit
The path after coming out of the clough with a surprise change of view of the moorland top
6 The summit! 557m. there are various ways down from here but use the route shown as this gives a good view back along a different part of the fell before turning back on itself to give good views of the various reservoirs.
Summit trig obelisk and views of the lower, inhabited land
7 Go right here above the buildings to get around them and use the gate at the far end to continue down
