Høgfossen is one of the highest waterfalls in Nordre Land, with a vertical fall of nearly 60 metres and a spectacular tourist attraction when the waterfall is at its most powerful. The water course was dammed and regulated by the hydropower industry in the middles of the 1920s. There are two hydropower stations here, Øvre Åvella and Åvella. Along the river there are lots of signs from previous times, and near to Høgfossen you will still find the old log flume in good condition.
Parts of the river flows through gullies. Gullies have high species diversity with lots of rare and threatened species. This includes amongst others the threatened beard lichen (Usnea (Dolichousnea) longissima). This beard lichen was previously used to decorate Christmas trees due to its characteristic long appearance. Now the species is very rare and must not be disturbed! The moist climate in the gully provides perfect conditions for rare species, especially lichen and mosses.
There is a toll barrier on the route.
When the waterfall is at its most powerful the top of Høgfossen can be seen from rv33 just south of Dokka.
Close to Dokka centre you will find accommodation at Dokka Camping, Dokka motel and Ankalterud Gård. Further away from Dokka you will find accommodation at Haugtun (Aust-Torpa), Ullsaker Øvre Gjestegård (Vest-Torpa), Etna Familiecamping (Etnedal), Lyngstrand Camping og Totenåsen Sportell.
