Tips and hints
Information for dog owners and the perfect walk:- Difficulty: moderate, low tar content, many narrow paths, well suited for an extended walk over uneven terrain
- Distracting stimuli: Directly at the beginning a well-traveled road must be crossed, after about 1 km a country road. From then on, the Bear Creek Trail runs away from roads and road noise. Please note that the noise of the military training area can sometimes be very loud during training exercises. Please keep skittish dogs on a leash throughout. Toward the end of the trail, you will pass some horse and cattle paddocks. There is a moderate volume of hikers on the premium trail predominantly in the recommended direction of travel, so hiker encounters should be expected, but fewer oncoming hikers.
- Water/Shade: The Bear Creek Trail is mostly through wooded terrain. Halfway through, it parallels the Bear Creek for a few hundred yards, where dogs and hikers can refresh themselves. The town pond is located directly at the start/finish.
- Trash cans/cleanliness: On the Bärenbachpfad, the principle of "what comes along on the hiking trail, comes back home with you" is followed as much as possible. Therefore, trash cans are only available in isolated places. The remains of dogs and humans should not be left on/along the trail, so that the enjoyment of the hiking trail is preserved for everyone.

Turn-by-turn directions
We follow the path on small trails through the forest to the “Ungeheuerstein”. After about 1 km, we reach the forest lodge via the “Weg der Stille” (path of silence), past the environmental conservation site with its bumblebee hotel and viewing nest box. By prior arrangement, hikers have the opportunity to take a rest here and recover from the first kilometres of the trail. Here, below the forest lodge, we can enjoy the first beautiful view of the Palatinate. The trail leads us over varied paths to the “Wild Lady's Gate”. Such portals can be found again and again at the edge of the path: They characterise the “Bärenbachpfad” and always show the hiker the right way.
Unadulterated peace and nature now await the hiker at the Bärenbach stream. The path becomes a trail again here and runs parallel to the slope. We follow the course of the Bärenbach stream past the Wildfrauenloch. The trail continues to meander along the Bärenbach on newly laid paths until it reaches the Auersbach. The most strenuous part of the hike is the ascent to the Rothenberg and here we are accompanied by the Allee der verschwundenen Heimat. It shows the villages that had to make way for the military training area in the 1930s.
At Hubertusruh we are rewarded for the climb by a unique view over the military training area. Here we also get a small glimpse of the training area. A refuge invites you to rest and relax. We follow the markings until we reach the “badger trail”.
The Bärenbach trail leads us back into the forest. Here we can enjoy our second view over the Palatinate. Now we head across meadows and fields directly to the next highlight - a beautiful view of the Hunsrück with the 816 m high Erbeskopf. From there it is only a few hundred metres until we reach our viewpoint over the town of Baumholder again and cross meadows and fields to the town pond.
