Breathtaking hike through the impressive Mrtvica Gorge in the heart of Montenegro. Sometimes wild and white, occasionally calm and emerald green, the river shows itself from a different, exciting side behind every bend — a real insider tip.
This hike could easily add to the bestseller "In the wild gorges of the Balkans" by Karl May. The route starts relatively unspectacularly along the river, which is still calm and wide at the beginning. Danilo's Bridge is the first highlight of this hike. Enjoy the river Mrtvica from its best side! The dense and species-rich jungle would be a real dream path even without the occasional views of the river. In the middle of this fairytale forest, just a few meters off the trail, we take a look through Kapija želja - the gate of wishes. The colors of the water shimmering through the natural rock gate seem almost surreal and make us linger for quite a while in this enchanted place. However, the highlight of the tour soon follows; a ledge that is easy to walk but spectacularly blasted into a vertical wall, which is the only way to pass the gorge.
The small detour to Kapija želja - the gate of wishes - is definitely worthwhile. Especially in spring, this dreamy landscape with its lush green of ferns, moss cushions and the Mrtvica itself is a true gem.

Safety informationDo not walk through the gorge during heavy rainfall; the paths can be flooded! Be aware of snakes and other animals - stay on the track to avoid them.
Getting thereFrom the capital Podgorica, follow the M2 northwards into the Morača gorge. At the village Medurijecje, the Mrtvica flows into the Morača. At a restaurant on the main road, a path branches off in a sharp left-hand bend down a bridge to the parking space.
ParkingOn marked, but only very small parking space directly in the first hairpin bend after the bridge

Sturdy shoes are advisable, as you will also be walking over rough rocky terrain.
In summer, it is pleasantly cool in the gorge itself, but the path to it offers no shade over longer distances. Bring sufficient liquid and snacks with you.
