Starting at Churchill Playing Fields in Monkseaton the route goes past Earsdon Churchyard with the New Hartley Pit disaster memorial before going along the disused railway line to Holystone before going to Starlight Castle in Holywell Dene and returning along the Avenue Line Waggonway.

This route starts at Churchill Playing Fields in Monkseaton and is a superb walk taking in one of the most significant pit disaster memorials in Earsdon Churchyard before going along a disused railway line to Holywell. We then divert to a birdhide with an array of wildlife before going past the memorial at Seaton Delaval to Starlight Castle in Holywell Dene. This ancent woodland and stream abounds with birdlife before returning along the waggonway which was once part of the Avenue railway line to Monkseaton. There are some excellent places to refresh and eat in the village such as the Left Luggage Room in the station for excellent ales and Omni for delicious food. Monkseaton is on the main Metro line from Newcastle so easily reached without a car.
