A picturesque walk to Lac Gaube, followed by a gradual descent to the Pont d’Espagne car park, from where you can catch a Navette (shuttle bus) back to Cauterets.

Having walked to Pont d’Espagne and then been transported by the Telesiege de Gaube you now walk a short way to Lac de Gaube. From here, the path back to the Pont d’Espagne car park passes by beautiful ferns and flora of many sorts. You can then catch one of the two or three afternoon shuttle buses (Navette) back to Cauterets.

Author’s recommendation

The 12 minute long chairlift ride preceding this walk whisks you up the mountainside effortlessly, way above Pont d’Espagne to around 1700 metres above sea level. Then a short walk along a track, with great views of the surrounding mountain peaks, brings you to the picturesque turquoise water of Lac de Gaube. This mountain lake, even in poor weather, is a breathtaking sight. Though a little rocky, the descending path to the Pont d’Espagne car park passes through a wealth of beautiful ferns and flora.

The café/bar at Lac Gaube is well placed for a moment of to relaxation with some refreshment whilst taking in the beauty of the lake.

Pont d’Espagne car park at bus stop, next to cable car ticket office (Caisses).

Turn-by-turn directions

0.0km - After exiting the chairlift, BEAR RIGHT at the fork in the track ahead of you. Continue along a gravel track to reach a bridge over river, with Lac Gaube to your right.

1.20km - Go STRAIGHT ON over the bridge and continue towards a restaurant/bar. About 50 metres before reaching the restaurant/bar, you will find a turning to your left (behind a bolder).

1.35km - TURN LEFT and continue on a track, soon becoming a path, with the river to your left. Follow the path all the way down to reach a road, with a stone bridge to your left.

3.50km - TURN RIGHT onto a road and walk down to the gap in the building in front of you, just in front of a car park.

3.80km - ARRIVE at the cable car ticket office (Casses) to find the shuttle bus stopping point alongside it, with 'NAVETTE' written in white on the ground.
