Get up close to a glacier with thousands of years of history.
The trail is a moderate hike up through the Steindalen valley. The Steindalshytta cabin is located a bit over 2 kilometers into the hike.
Information signs about the flora and fauna, history, and local place names may be found along the path. Signs have also been erected near the glacier showing its recession year by year.
Do not walk onto the glacier unless you have relevant experience.
- The glacier has front positions covering a period of more than 8,000 years. The oldest of these are in the lower valley, but completely new spires have started to appear up at the glacier.
Tips and hints
The glacier is accessible from the eastern side of the Lyngen Alps.
The trailhead begins at the bottom of the valley by route 868 between Oteren and Lyngseidet. Follow the signs to “IMA Tursenter” and park by the Akselstua community hall.
