A circular route from Glyntawe to Llyn y Fan Fawr along the Beacons Way. Map used OL12 although path is so well used you rarely need it to navigate when no snow around.
Distance 10.6 km
You can park in the car park opposite the now closed Tafarn Y Garreg. The Beacons Way passes alonside the car park and is signed across the river and around the farm ajacent to the river. As you arrive at the sheepfold and cross onto the open access land the Beacons Way is well trodden so easy to follow handrailing to the right alonside a wire fence. As you walk up the valley alonside the fence you will see the ridge of Fan Hir appearing in front of you. When you come to the end of the fence as it veers off to the right 843185 the path carries on alongside the stream with its pretty waterfalls. The walk now follows the base of the spectacular Fan Hir along a path on a small ridge. Looking to the right you will have excellent views across to Pen y Fan. The going does become slightly boggy in places but is generally easy going with a slight incline. The landscape will then open out with Llyn a Fan Fawr in front of you. There is a path that loops around the lake if you want an extra wander. From this viewpoint over the lake the Beacons Way can easily be followed to your left up onto Bwlch Giedd. This part of the walk is the steepest strech but the is a well laid stone path with steps for part of it. Once on the top you can either head right up on to Fan Brycheiniog or head to your left onto Fan Hir. Although there is no marked path on the OS map there is a clear path all along the edge of Fan Hir. Although I was there on a less than clear day I still had some views across to Fan Gyhirych, Fan Fawr and just about in the gloom I could make out the snowy top of Pen y Fan. On a clear day this view would undoubtedly be spectacular. The easy though blowy walking continues until you drop down onto Allt Fach with more superb views along the rocky edge of Fan Hir. The well worn path now drops steeply back down to the sheepfold from the beginning of the walk. Hope you enjoy this not too difficult but glorious walk.
