Torsteinen is a true hidden gem with views as impressive as any hike in Norway, but without the foot traffic of much more famous trails. Located in Lærdal at the edge of the Sognefjord, the long and demanding trail leads to a large stone at an elevation of 1,170 meters. From there, high amongst the mountains, an incredible view opens up down the valley to the fjord.
For a much shorter and easier version of this trail, consider the hike to Løberg.
Tips, hints and links
- Free parking (very limited spaces)
The trailhead is in the eastern part of Lærdalsøyri, across the Lærdalselvi River. Lærdalsøyri is at the northern end of Norwegian Scenic Route Aurlandsfjellet.
You can walk from the town center, but it will add an extra 2.5 kilometers each way to the journey.
There is a small amount of parking by the roadside next to Lærdal Hospital.
Walk along the road past the hospital and as soon as you cross the bridge over the Ofta River you’ll reach the trailhead.
