This 6.5 mile route uses the Levada dos Piornais which feeds down from the hills to the west side of Funchal. Hillside and urban walking. We used the bus to get to the start, route 24 at time of writing.
Distance 10.7 km
This route comes with a health warning. Part way into the route the levada is carved into the hill and for about 200 yards it uses short tunnels to continue. These tunnels are only about 5 feet tall, at best, and in between have sheer drops to one side, protected by a, not too substantial, rail (see photos). This was exiting enough ( and I must say quite enjoyable in a wierd way) but just after the tunnels the levada path narrows with no rail and sheer drops. At this point we decided to turn back, leave the levada and use the road back to the start point ( via the Madeira Shopping Centre for a well earned coffee break ) and then rejoin the levada and continue back to Funchal. At our age you can only cram so much exitement into a walk. Some younger hikers we met later said they had completed the levada walk ok and I probably would have continued 35 years ago. Have fun but take care.
