The trail does not follow the original Via Francigena from Montelungo (one of the few accomodations in winter) up until Cavezzana d'Antena. It is quite a long trip to Pontremoli, but it can be definitely walked in one day. We did it with ~10kg backpacks with 1-hour break for lunch. There are no steep slopes, but the path keeps going up and down. However, it is worth it: you will pass through olive trees, old stone bridge, nice landscapes. Longer than the paved state road, but much better!
